No Botched Jobs at These 5 Best Tattoo Shops in Toronto!

tattoo-shops-in-toronto
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

With the growing trend of getting tattoos, I’ve finally decided to take the plunge myself. However, I’m well aware of the horror stories of botched tattoo jobs resulting in poor artwork or, even worse, infections.

That’s why I spent time researching various tattoo shops in our city. I wanted a place that practices proper hygiene and has experienced tattoo artists with excellent track records. I’m sharing my findings here!

How much does it cost to get a tattoo in Toronto?

Most tattoo shops in Toronto charge $180 per hour for an average tattoo session.

Please note that this fee can vary depending on the artist’s experience, the size and complexity of the design, and your preferred shop.

How We Chose

Artist experience – We picked tattoo shops that employ tattoo artists with solid art portfolios and more than three years of experience in the industry.
Hygiene and cleanliness – We also prefer those that maintain strict hygiene standards, such as using sterilized equipment and ensuring artists wear gloves during each tattoo session.
Aftercare support – We checked whether they offer tattoo retouching services and provide clients with maintenance tips to keep their tattoos looking fresh.
Professionalism – We looked at whether their tattoo artists always treat their clients respectfully and honestly. We also checked whether they respond quickly to enquiries.
Price fairness – We considered whether their prices are fair considering the artists’ experience, the uniqueness of tattoo styles offered, aftercare support, accessibility, and hygiene policies.

A popular tattoo shop I keep hearing about is Heartless Ink in Liberty Village. Founded by Esteban Rodríguez, a talented artist originally from Cuba, this studio offers tattoo styles like black and grey realism, colour realism, micro realism, and fine line tattoos.

They offer free design consultations, so you can work closely with one of their artists to create a custom piece that’s perfect for you. They even offer tattoo cover-up services if you want to transform a poorly done piece into something beautiful.

I also appreciate that they offer zero-interest financing for full-day sessions.

However, their services are in extremely high demand, so they sometimes have to cancel appointments at the last minute.

Pros

  • 6 years of experience
  • Offers free design consultations
  • Has tattoo cover-up services
  • Offers 0% interest financing

Cons

  • Tends to get fully booked quickly
  • Sometimes cancels appointments abruptly

The whole experience with Heartless Ink was awesome

“Gwyn did an amazing job with my tattoo! She took the time to perfect it all during our free consultation, which made the day of the appointment go super smooth. If you are looking for a fine-line tattoo artist, I highly recommend you reach out to Gwyn!

The whole experience with Heartless Ink was awesome. Professional customer service and a great atmosphere inside the shop. I felt very welcome here and will be back again!”

Hands down one of the most professional studios I have ever seen

“Heartless Ink is hands down one of the most professional studios I have ever seen. The friendly staff made my experience great so far, right from the phone call I received to set up my consultation. I chose Heartless Ink as my first tattoo and they have not disappointed. I am currently working with Daga on a full sleeve, spartan battle scene. Both sessions so far have been an excellent experience. From the cool atmosphere to all* of the artists getting excited to see the art work had made us want to come back. I would highly recommend this studio to anyone looking for a first tattoo or one of many. Small, big, simple or detailed. You won’t regret it.”

Chronic Ink has been around in Toronto since 2008 and has earned over 90 awards, including the Best Back Piece Tattoo Award at the 2014 NIX convention. Over the years, they’ve successfully expanded and are now operating five locations across the GTA.

They have a diverse range of tattoo styles, like realism, fine lines, and illustrative. They even offer scalp micropigmentation services, which can help reduce the appearance of hair loss.

Another unique aspect of theirs is mobile tattoo services, which I think can be a neat feature for festivals and parties. It’s a great way to make your event even more memorable.

However, it’s worth noting that they sometimes fail to respond to enquiries. There were also some reports of their artists arriving late to appointments.

Pros

  • 17 years of experience
  • Has 90 awards
  • 5 locations in the GTA
  • Offers scalp micropigmentation
  • Has mobile tattoo services

Cons

  • Unpunctual staff

The place where I got my tattoo from was Flame Wise Ink. This award-winning tattoo shop has been around since 2019 and has racked up an impressive 92 awards, including Best Large Realism at the Inked Circus Barrie 2023!

A huge reason why I chose them was their incredibly diverse range of tattoo styles. I opted for a traditional Japanese tattoo, but they also offer realism, ornamental, floral, and even anime designs.

The process of getting a custom design was a breeze, thanks to their free design consultations. Additionally, the professional photoshoot included with my tattoo session was a fantastic touch. It made sharing my new ink on social media easier!

Unfortunately, one issue I find with them is they charge a fee for touch-up services, which is something most shops include for free as part of their aftercare service.

Pros

  • 6 years of experience
  • Has 92 awards
  • Offers free design consultations
  • Includes photoshoots in every tattoo session

Cons

  • Has a fee for touch-up services
  • Only accepts e-transfer and cash payments

My first tattoo experience was nothing short of amazing

“My first tattoo experience was nothing short of amazing, and I owe it all to Phil and this incredible studio. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the sheer size and impeccable cleanliness, far exceeding any expectations I had. From start to finish, the entire process was seamless and enjoyable. Communication was perfect – easy and clear, making me feel comfortable and informed every step of the way. Phil’s expertise was evident; he patiently walked me through each stage, explaining exactly how the tattoo would be applied and what to expect. The whole experience was absolutely fabulous, and I can’t recommend this studio highly enough. If you’re looking for a professional, welcoming, and top-notch tattoo experience, this is the place to go.”

Better safety standards/sanitary practices than an operating room

“They should have Michelin Stars for tattoo shops. My experience at Flame Wise was incredible. Went in for a consultation with Daniel V. He listened and took measurements and outlines of my arm. He sent the design in advance for me to review and was very flexible with tweaking or adding anything I wanted to the design (didn’t have to, it was perfect). He opened everything in front of me. The place is so clean. Better safety standards/sanitary practices than an operating room. His work is second to none. I needed the big piece done quickly so he accommodated my request and did back to back days. Three amazing flowers with my kids silhouettes weaved in. He created flowers that look strong and delicate at the same time, which is a perfect way to sum up kids. Good tattoos are expensive, but worth the investment. I’ll update with photos soon!”

Colibri Tattoo and Piercing is a good choice because of its clean facilities and professional tattoo artists. It’s easy to drop by since they accept walk-ins and have four locations across Toronto.

One thing that impressed me is their massive team of 60 diverse artists! They can create both flash and custom designs in various styles, including realism and Asian-inspired.

I also appreciate their special deals that make tattoos more affordable. On Wednesdays, you can get a 25% discount on any tattoo design if you walk in.

Plus, their $50 Flash Tattoo Thursdays offer a good deal for those who love preset designs. You can choose from a variety of options for just $50. Not bad at all!

“Amazing place with such talented and friendly staff! Had my first ever tattoo done by Marcos, who was incredibly kind and knowledgeable throughout the whole process, and I LOVE the end result!! Highly recommend :)”

Did a spectacular job and I truly couldn’t be happier

“Navi was my tattoo artist at Colibri Downtown and did the tops of my feet. He did a spectacular job and I truly couldn’t be happier. He made a custom design for both tattoos based on my vision, and provided really expert recommendations on the size and placement. During my consultation, he was very patient while I went back and forth with the placement and minor modifications to the design. And when it came to the actual tattooing, he was very swift and dexterous with the tattoo gun so it was minimally painful. I wouldn’t hesitate to get another tattoo with Navi!”

Csaba’s passion and unique talent resonates in his work

“What an amazing experience with an exceptionally talented artist! Csaba’s passion and unique talent resonates in his work. He designed a timeless piece for me that I will cherish for a lifetime, and I cannot thank him enough for it. Every part of the experience was incredible, from the consultations to the finishing touches, Csaba and his team worked tirelessly to bring my vision to life. All in all a great experience

“Just got tattooed at Timeless Ink. Csaba was great from beginning to end. He helped me figure out the best design using my ideas and turned it into an amazing tattoo! During the actual tattooing, Csaba would check in and make sure I was comfortable. The whole experience was relaxed and unrushed. The rest of the artists/staff at timeless were very friendly and attentive. All in all a great experience.”
